Tomiko Itooka
Tomiko Itooka became the oldest person in the world on August 19, 2024, following the death of Maria Branyas Morera.
Tomiko has been an athlete since high school, when she was a member of her school’s volleyball club. Later in life, she took up mountain climbing.
We filmed with Tomiko at her nursing home on Respect for the Aged Day, celebrated on the third Monday in September in Japan. We were joined that day by her son, Hiroshi Kai, and Yuki Uebo from Guinness World Records, who presented Tomiko with her Guinness certificate.
